Traditionally, the research process in science and medicine has been documented in paper-based laboratory notebooks. Nowadays there is an increasing interest in electronic laboratory notebooks (ELNs) at universities, as ELNs are adapting more and more to the requirements of academic research. This article introduces the approaches taken to establish an ELN service at three universities in the United States and Scotland, as well as ELN projects in Germany. It points out ELN interfaces with aspects of storing, re-using, publishing, and long-term archiving of research data and discusses possible roles for libraries.
